In today's world of instant gratification, coaching is an outlier in the sense that it is one of those processes that does take time to deliver results.

So how much time is a legitimate amount of time you should invest in order to get the best out of a coach?

A lot depends on your objective, but here are a few handy tips to get the best out of your coaching.

Chemistry Session

Now that you have decided to explore coaching, do ask for a chemistry session. This will allow you and the coach both to take a call on whether you are a good fit for each other. This session usually lasts 90 minutes and is free of charge. I would reconsider taking on a coach who is not willing to invest this time in you.

Set goals

Ideally, each session should have an agenda to discuss. It need not be a big one, but a good coach will help you get to the theme of your objectives in each session in a progressive manner and also help you track your progress over sessions.

How many sessions do you need?

This really depends on the goals you want to address through coaching. It usually takes 6, one-hour sessions to achieve progress. So, do give yourself that much time. You can usually work with a coach to set a pricing that will help you commit to six sessions and then take it forward at your pace.

How frequent should these sessions be?

Starting with a weekly session is a good way to get into the rhythm of coaching. This can be then moved to fortnightly or monthly depending on your preference and time availability.

So overall, if you ensure some of the above basics are in place you can see breakthroughs quite quickly. Though I would not feel comfortable in saying 2 months or 6 months is enough to address your goals, at the very least you can see insights and even a map of your steps ahead within 6 sessions.

Happy Coaching!
