Appraisals and the 4 A’s: A Coaching Lens to Unlock True Achievement
Each appraisal season brings with it a pause—a moment to reflect on how far we've come and where we’ve held back. As I reviewed my own progress over the years, a pattern emerged. Despite having the time, intent, and capability, I often felt I could have achieved more.
It wasn’t about missing goals—it was about not tapping into my full potential.
Working with a professional coach helped me to bridge Capability and Achievement through the 4 A’s: Awareness, Acceptance, Action, and Accountability.
Awareness was the first turning point. I realised I thrive on structure and lose energy between projects. Knowing this allowed me to plan differently, filling those gaps with tasks that keep my momentum high. Once I was clear about what I needed or wanted, my energy started to align with the task.
Acceptance followed. I was often frustrated with delays caused by dependencies on other team members. Dealing with inefficiency made me withdraw from some people and relationships. Through coaching, I started shifting my focus to what was within my control, which helped me stay positive and enabled me to move forward.
Then came Action. I learned to keep moving, even if slowly. Progress, not perfection, became the mantra. Coaching provided the space to pause and reflect, allowing me to set micro-goals and take small, consistent steps toward my larger goals.
And finally, Accountability. Sharing my goals in a safe space with someone who partners with me added weight to my intentions. Suddenly, my goals transformed into commitments.
The 4As have now become my personal framework, helping me clarify what I want and make the decisions needed to achieve it.
That’s the magic professional coaching can unlock: clarity of self.
Knowing my personal energy rhythms (Awareness); reframing limited beliefs (Acceptance); making steady progress (Action); and building systems for consistency (Accountability) —the 4As – have helped me uncover what was holding me back and take conscious action.
If you feel you are not meeting your potential, perhaps it’s time to explore what you truly want and what is holding you back. A coaching conversation might just be the shift you need.
