How coaching can help you strengthen your adversity quotient
First came Covid. Then the layoffs, especially in tech.
Trueup.ai reported that 106, 950 tech professionals lost their jobs in January 2023. Needless to say, it's an anxious time for all of us on planet earth. This is where one can bluntly say that a coach can really help you muscle up your AQ or adversity quotient. Here is how:
Provide a safe space
A coach can provide a safe, non-judgmental space to talk through your current challenges. Make sure you ask for a chemistry session (an opening session Picture created using DALL-E-2 that allows you and the coach to assess if you are the right fit for each other), make a rough list of the issues you want to assess and proceed. The coach will guide you through the process of coaching. All you need to do is talk.
Help you establish your goals
Often during a layoff or adversity, the mind can freeze and devolve into a cycle of anxiety that further impacts your ability to plan and take action. A coach can support you in gaining insights derived from your key strengths and passions and help chart a plan that is strategic and not reactive.
Hold you accountable
A good coach as per the standards of competency laid out by the 'International Coaching Federation', "Partners with the client to define or reconfirm measures of success for what the client wants to accomplish in a session." In simple words, a coach will help you draw out your plan, set goals that you can measure in a meaningful manner and follow up with the progress on them.
Be your cheerleader
If you thought all that a coach does is help you plan solutions, think again. A good coach sees you clearly, especially your best qualities and genuinely admires your journey and wants to support you in the way ahead without judgement. They may not carry pom-poms but a coach is genuinely your best cheerleader.
Lastly coaching changes both you and the coach. I have learnt a lot from my clients. One client has taught me to plan big, and another taught me the value of persistence. Coaching is a two-way process and perhaps what we need most during adversity. A person invested in our well-being.
