IQ gets you hired, EQ gets you promoted!
Coaching can help you boost leadership EQ
BharatPe is the gift that goes on giving! A virtual textbook on how not to build a coaching culture in a company. Forget supportive, the CEO of the company, Suhail Sameer, used completely crass tonality and language to hit out at the sister of former BharatPe founder, Ashneen Grover after she commented in support of BharatPe employee Karan Sekri’s post about delayed salaries. Read the full exchange here:
Though Sameer has since apologized, the damage is done.
On the other side of the post is young Karan Sarki whose polite but firm post won support and he is currently enjoying his 60 seconds of fame. If Suhail Sameer has not responded the way he did, he may not have enjoyed the support he did as professionals usually frown on a public airing of differences with your organization.
What can we learn about a company’s culture from this?
Coaching culture builds trust. Clearly, Karan did not feel he had access to support from his firm. If you like and trust the people in your firm and the leadership feels fair and supportive then you are unlikely to air your grievances publicly.
Building a coaching culture is not an overnight process, coming on the back of arrogant-sounding behavior, an apology is not likely to reset matters back to neutral.
Growth through coaching needs to be baked into the company from day
1) Bad founder or employeebehaviourr can derail you overnight in today’s ‘ the world is my digital soapbox’ approach to communication. Coaching can help sow the right seeds from day
2) And perhaps save you from the inevitable OTT special series (The Dropout on Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes, Super Pumped on Uber’s Travis Kalanick, and WeCrashed on WeWorks) Coaching building that mysterious EQ in people at scale that is so essential to success. As the experts say IQ gets you hired, but EQ gets you promoted!
